Increasing our Reach
This year we set a new goal for our outreach events: one every month! Thanks to the hard work of students and mentors we were able to reach that goal, experiencing around a 200% increase in our event count from our previous season! Today we bring to you a summary of our favorite events that didn’t get a post of their own.
DLR Group
In mid-February, we had an outreach event with the DLR Group, a design firm with a location in Minneapolis. Thanks to one of our mentors, team members were able to tour the space. We learned more about what being a real engineer is like. We got to dive into the different types of engineering, and even split into groups to design and build a city that would survive a random natural disaster!
Stampede Social
At the beginning of March, we hosted a social to get to know our fellow team, 3630 Stampede. It was important that we were familiar with them, after all, we were going to be sharing a bus with them for our entire Rocket City Regional! The event was a great success, we had many team members making connections and strengthening our bond not only with Stampede but with each other as well.

Earth Day Cleanup
In late April, Talon had an Earth Day cleanup event. We walked around Round Lake, which is right next to our high school, and picked up trash from the lake, shore, and paths. After gathering bags of garbage, we headed to Dairy Queen as a teambuilder. We value sustainability on our team, we even use recycled signage as the belly pan of our robots!
Feed My Starving Children
Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a nonprofit organization that packs food to send to children in need. At the beginning of May, we volunteered there, and packed 66 boxes of food, or about 38,016 meals!
My Book Day
Every first grader in the district comes to the high school for one day a year, for an adorable and inspiring event called My Book Day, in mid-May. My Book Day is an event run by the district where every first grade student is given a free book, and many clubs at the high school present on why it is important to read. We brought last year’s robot, Cronus, and demoed it for the kids. In addition, we talked about why they should keep on reading. For several students on Talon, the only thing they remember from this event when they were in first grade was the robots.
Senior Day
As we near graduation, there are many events celebrating our seniors. One of them was called Senior Day, where seniors were congratulated and recognized and speeches were made. Talon was invited to come and bring some fun to the crowd. At the end of the event, to hype up the seniors, we shot our t-shirt cannon while the drumline played.
We really enjoy working with our community on events like these! Check out our upcoming events page to see what we’ll be up to next!
