Training Time: Gearing Up for the Season

Training Month

We tried something new during our offseason this year, dedicating an entire month to getting people trained in each of our various subteams! This was a great opportunity for everyone to explore areas of the team they were interested in and learn more about them. Every subteam put together at least an hour of content to showcase what they do, how team members can get involved, and what makes their subteam a fun one to be a part of. Overall, the experience was a great success, with team members who participated reporting that they felt more confident heading into the season. This is a tradition we plan to maintain well into the future of Talon.

MinneTrials (aka Training Month: Robot Edition)

While the meeting-based training month works great for our business subteams, where they can jump right into working on their chosen subteams, and streamlining our tool sign-off process it was lacking in one key area: How were people going to practice the skills they learned in the engineering trainings while waiting for the season to begin? As a solution, our team found MinneTrials, an off-season competition organized by team 2239, Technocrats. MinneTrials has the goal of helping rookies learn the basics of robotics, a great cause!

Our team split our rookie members into three MinneTrials teams, one of which was entirely composed of non-male members. From there, the teams got to put what they’d learned about robotics into practice! They worked hard designing, building, and competing with their bots. Experienced team members took up the role of mentors, aiding our rookies. When it came time for competition our teams got to put their work to the test. We had one team, with their robot “Corro”, advance to the playoffs! Even though we didn’t take home a trophy, MinneTrials was still a great experience!
